The Taranaki Team - 28th October 2007 04:15pm

Taranaki bodybuilders preparing for the event this weekend (NZFBB Taranaki's 07) came together for a final run through of their poses and routines. Everyone was in good heart - some fresh from the Nationals - but looking forward to the upcoming comp.

Below are sights and scenes from the session - Kara, Evelyn, Farah, Heidi and Kapo running through their paces under the watch eyes of Chantalle and Phil Kuklinski.

Some final words from local Event organizer Phil Kuklinski about the event this weekend in New Plymouth, Taranaki at the TSB Showplace:

"OK people just a reminder, it's all on this saturday in New Plymouth, the Taranaki champs. I have had enquiries from all over the country and it's shaping up to be a great show. Remember there are no Taranaki Champs next year as the Coromandel has now got a show. So be sure to get along. Current Mr NZ Mike Debenham will be guest posing and the hot hot Taranaki cheerleaders will be doing an item as well.
There are some great prizes up for grabs and a goodie bag for all competitors with a whole range of nice things in it.
We will be having an after party at the venue in the upstairs lounge area so competitors, judges and spectators and supporters can mix and mingle.
I wish all competitors the very best in their final days preparation and we will see you all there for the weigh in Friday between 6 to 8pm and then the Contest saturday". Cheers, Phil K.

NZFBB Nationals - 21st October 2007 11:17am

Traveling to Auckland for the Nationals was worth it! Over  140 competitors were on display. I was only able to attend the pre-judging (I had to drive back to New Plymouth that day again) so as I put these up I am not aware of placings. But there was plenty of muscle on show, and here are some of my memories from the day - the competitors, the line-ups and some of personalities on display which made it memorable.

NZFBB NI Champs 15 Sept 07 - 15th September 2007 05:20pm

Today I went to the NZFBB North Island Champs In Masterton. Well worth the trip, although I only made it to the pre-judging. I counted around 49 competitors. Congratulations to all competitors. Everyone looked good. Not too many Open Physique men - however the number competing in the new Classic category is beginning to pick up in popularity. Personal shots from the day are below. Hopefully all categories are accurate. naturally for full results and all official details check out the NZFBB web site.

NABBA Napier Photos - 7th August 2007 06:40pm

Although there were only 23 athletes competing at the Hawkes Bay NABBA event, the show was well run and everyone seemed to have a good time. Bertie the compare did a great job and the audience loved his strip down and historic movie flick about bodybuilding. The only real disappointment was the lack of Physique men in the event, however, it was also nice to see the athletic guys steal the show.

Here are some shots from the comp.

Below: Here are some of the athletic guys, plus also (I think) some of the Physique competitors

Now for the Physique women ....

Jill (right) won the class and overall. However I also thought Colleen (centre) was also looking really good at this comp !

PS: Is that a young Arnold in the making or what?!

Vicky Tucker (2nd from right) participated in the event - she hasn't competed for several yearsi !

Vicky Tucker - Latest Profile Update - 18th June 2007 12:57pm
Vicky Tucker

It has been a few years since Vicky Tucker donned her bikini and competed, but without a doubt she has remained an avid supporter of bodybuilding. For those who have sat in the audience at bodybuilding events, Vicky’s yells of support, instruction and at times, heckling (all in good nature!) can often be heard above all others.

Today she is in full swing organising the upcoming NABBA Hawkes Bay show – scheduled for August 4th – and guess what – she is also aiming to compete again herself. That in itself – is worth seeing !

So for those who want to see Vicky and all those other hard working bodybuilders strut their stuff – then why not head over to Napier – have a great weekend and support provincial bodybuilding. I, for one, will be.

In the meantime, here is an update from Vicky about the show as a member of its organizing committee, as well as an update about her own pre-comp progress:

Vicky’s Hawkes Bay NABBA Show Update
Date: August 4th
Venue: Century Theatre, Napier.
Time: Morning show 10am start; Evening show:  6pm or 6.30pm start.

The Organising Committee: Marianne Poole, secretary Nabba  Jim Pitt President Nabba,  Sue Swannell, Vicky Tucker (and more to hopefully come on board for the next meeting on the 1st July).

This is only the second year for the Hawkes Bay show so according to Vicky, the team is hoping it will be bigger than last year!  (where they had about 16 athletes). At present no guest posers are planned or confirmed as it is only a small show,   however they do have  "BERTIE" Napier’s Art Deco personality as the compere this year

Vicky’s Tucker’s Story and HB Show Pre-Comp Update
I will be competing again at the age of 61 after 4 years of retirement!  I mainly decided to do this to support a friend.

My best result was when I placed 2nd at the nationals in 2000 there were 6 in the class of senior figure there was just the one class then  over 35 so I was 54 then.
I have had several 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings over the 6 years I competed.

I was heavier than I had been before at the start of the year so it was a challenge, however training and bodyweight and fat loss have gone very well and am fairly confident I will reach my goal.
The weight will not be a problem I am already at the weight I am allowed to be so just have to loose the rest of my body fat and not loose to much more weight (muscle) in the process.

Willy Walker - 18th May 2007 03:17pm
Willie Walker: Profile of a Bodybuilder/Lifestyler

Back Ground: Willy is a bit of a veteran competitor - having competed for 7 years and completed in over 50 comps. These include in NZ & Australia.

He averages 6 competitions a year - the best being 8 in one calendar year. Phew !

He has always trained himself and does his own dietary regime.

Willy first competed in March 2000 in Whangarei and the last comp was 29th April 07 Sydney Australia. (He is photographed here at his recent Aussie comp).

He started bodybuilding as a bit of a dare from a friend and has learnt by reading muscle magazines and practical experience. He has won numerous competitions and usually places in the top 3 – usually competing in both the masters and open classes for his weight & height.

Some Comp stats:
Competition weight is 72 kgs at 4% body fat, height 172cm.

Off –season: Weight fluctuates between 78-82kgs at 10-12% body fat
(but because of the amount of shows he does Willy is pretty lean all year round).

Recent Results: 2nd place Silver medal at the World Police & Fire GamesAdelaide Australia March 07.

Willy was the only NZ Police Rep in bodybuilding at this World Class event attracting over 8000 athletes from 60 different countries. There were 70 different codes of sport comparable to an Olympics and is the 3rd biggest gathering of athletes in the World behind an actual Olympics and any World Cup.

He also came 2nd at the Australasian BB Championships in Sydney 29th April 2007.This was a highly contested event with true Trans- Tasman rivalry.

What it takes to be a bodybuilder according to Willy: Shear determination, dedication and blood & guts. Mental hardness is the key and being totally focused !

Keeping Up With Willy: A Typical Day in his Life

0430   Rise & Shine: 1hr power walk with wrist & ankle weights, stretch, cool down

0530   Shower, prepare food for work to last entire day.

0625   Start work 10 hr shift

0830    Meal 2, 10.30 Meal 3; 12.30 Meal 4; 13.30 Meal 5; 1430 Meal 6.

1630      Finish Work travel to Gym

1700      Start intensive weight training 45min then cardiovascular training for another 40min, usually treadmill or cross trainer, end with 5min deep stretching.

1900.. ish  Travel home and Meal 7, dinner.

2000   Relax by catching up with normal daily chores

2100    Meal 8 and time out with very understanding partner

2200  Hit the sack for some good quality and well earned sleep

This cycle is repeated with out fail and religiously at least 3-4 times a week all year round but when preparing for a competition 6 weeks out the training is doubled to 8-10 times a week. The cycle of eating regularly never changes just the types of foods changes. It is a good clean diet all year round, with no exceptions!

Next Competition

The Central North Island Champs: 29th Sept 2007

Some personal comments from Willy about bodybuilding:

Bodybuilding is the most disciplined & rewarding sport I have been involved with.
It is a very much an individual sport which challenges your will power every step of the way, that’s exciting. As an individual sport there is no one to let down except yourself which gives you the desire to do even better.
Bodybuilding for me is more about the life style you need to live in terms of healthy eating & living, intensive training and staying committed. The bodybuilding competition itself is just an ‘extra’ I tack into my normal lifestyle. Winning is just an “added bonus”. In my view every one’s a winner who experiences the processes and competes.
The best advice to anyone who is interested in competing is ensure you have the substantial time required, support at home & abroad and most of all ‘the desire”.

Michelle Middleton - 5th May 2007 08:29am
Name: Michelle Middleton

Background:
Before I had children I used to be a cook and still have a passion for cooking. But I am a firm believer at bringing up my children and being there for them so have stayed at home for the last 16 years approx and put my life into them, my husband and home.

As a child I was a very good athlete and won the athletic cup 4 years in a row. I also broke records for long jump. I played badminton and netball also.

I started going to the gym in August 2004. I have always had huge square shoulders and a muscular physique so it wasn't long before people were coming up to me and asking me
if I was competing in bodybuilding or telling me that I should be competing.

There was a bodybuilder at the gym at the time and he lent me a video of the N.Z Nationals that he had competed in. My husband and I watched it and my husband said to me "I can see you up there!" My reply was" I don't know about that!" but I changed my mind and the rest is history !

Competition History and transition from a BB’er Novice.

I have just jumped in and learnt about BB’ing as I have gone along.

My first competition was in Wellington  May 2005 with NZFBB.

I didn't even diet ! …but I soon realized I looked a bit fatter than everyone else. I still managed second in novice figure short.

I didn't really enjoy it. I was very nervous going on stage and found it even harder to do my routine. My husband and I didn't know how to apply the tan and we were quite stressed about it.
I thought the people weren't very friendly and didn't get much help at all for a newcomer.

It was my husband that pushed me into doing my next comp. He found a PT for me. With supplements, a better diet and more help I trained for my next comp. I also switched to NABBA on the basis my body, which is quite hard and lean, may be more suitable.

I competed in the Manawatu comp in August 2005 in Novice Figure Tall. My height at 163cm is right on the border line. I won my class.

I then bought a business – a café and that was the end of bodybuilding for a while. I didn’t make it to the gym for 10 months. It was sold in July 2006 and by this time I was 6kg heavier and quite soft.

12 weeks later after intense weight training and cardio I entered a competition in Wellington September or Oct 2006. I came second in open Figure. From there I went to the Nationals in Palmerston but didn't come anywhere. I was up against some hefty competition, people who had been competing for 6 years or more.
I went into another comp in November INBA Taupo and came second in Open figure. There were 4 in my class.

I have just entered my first competition for 2007. I was absolutely stoked to win  Miss Bay of Plenty 2007.

A Typical Day in my life is:

6-6.30 am. Get up. Sometimes it is 5 am because I am so hungry when I'm dieting.

Meal One: I eat my own made up muesli: 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup branflakes, 2-3Tblsps walnuts and almonds, 1 Tblsp pumpkin seeds and 1 heaped Tbsp currants with about 1/2 cup trim milk. I have 1 coffee with trim and equal tab.

Meal Two: 1 fruit, apple, banana, or pear, or sometimes a protein bar or shake. Sometimes I have an egg white omelet (5 whites with one yolk).

Meal Three: Pita bread with 100g chicken breast, 1'2 a grated carrot. Chopped up broccoli, weight watchers honey and mustard. Or a tortilla wrap with 1/2 an avocado, chicken breast, sprinkle of colby cheese and chilli sauce.  Or sometimes just chicken salad including avocado with brown rice.

Meal Four: 1 fruit

Meal Five: Chicken, brown rice (3/4 cup) and broccoli  (2 cups) with toasted chopped toasted almonds (8) on top.

Meal Six: 1 packet uncle toby's rolled oats or my homemade muesli. One
jarrah chocolate (only 43 cals per serve Yummy!!)

Training:

Cardio: I walk and run for 5-6 days a week for 1-1 1/2 hrs per day always including the hills around Napier and steps.

Gym: 1/2 hrs per day 5 days a week. No particular routine – every day something different and sometimes the same exercise day after day as long as that muscle isn't sore.

My arms are extremely lean and my legs don't match my arms so for my last comp I did my legs sometimes 4 times a week. It worked – they had way more definition ! So you don’t know what will work for you unless you experiment.

I do not have a job at the moment and if I did I don't know if I'd be able to train to the extent I do now. I also have a husband and 3 children to look after plus my home and hobbies such as sewing, cooking and gardening.

For my last competition I did my own nutrition, training, made up my own routine, and had no training with posing. I am now going by my past experience.
Michelle in red, centre
Good days and Bad Days.

Yes I have both of these !

Most of the time I feel great but if I have a bad sleep I find everything very hard. I also get really tired by 8 o’clock at night as I go so hard out during the day. I also find at night that my mood and thinking is quite negative but have learnt not to trust this as in the morning I'm back into it and wondering what the hell was wrong with me the night before.

For my last comp I would say that I over trained. I didn't have a rest day and now I know this is very important. I got myself into some pretty exhausted states and very emotional. So I have learnt from this.

I find the week leading up to the comp that you can start to doubt yourself.

You don't feel good enough and you wonder if it's all worth it. One week before my last comp I as still 2kg over the desired weight. I was going to give up. But on the Monday morning I saw my bikini and bodybuilding shoes lying on my bedroom floor. Then I thought of the last 7 weeks I had ran and trained and I thought ..."What is one more week!!! I can do this!!

I believe everything begins in your mind and it's what you say to yourself that you can do. Anyone can quit. That's easy!! I have formed a picture in my mind of what I want to look like and it is that picture that I cling to.

There are heredity things that I cannot change about myself but whatever I do in life I give it my best. You can only give your best !!!

Sandy's Comp Update - 28th March 2007 05:21pm
As an update to Sandra Lee Jose's Profile (which was featured earlier - you can check this out if you scroll right down to the bottom of this page) she has provided an update.

Sandy at the time of her first profiled feature, was in  training for two comps The FBB All States on the 10th March and the World Police and Fire Games on the 17th March.

Sandy ended up winning her category at both events. Here is her update:

What was it like clocking down on the final week leading to your comp the other week?
How did I feel? Um? Excited and looking forward to the show, I love the last week, because it is the toughest and this is really where you are up against it, you have to bring out the strength mentally, this is the week when winners are made.
I was feeling terrible physically, exhausted, weak, dizzy, basically in la la land all the time.
I had to focus 110% just to drive to the gym.

What did you do for training and cardio on that final week?
No cardio for the last week.
Sunday Monday and Tuesday I double the volume of work, set and reps. Making sure all the muscle and worked to remove any carbs. I hate high reps so this is not fun for me, but the whole idea is burn the muscle.

What did you eat? - Did you low carb? Carb up? If so, on which days?
Sunday Monday and Tuesday is protein, and water.
No carbs, and the water increases 5, 6, 7 litres a day.

Then wed and Thursday are carb days.
Wednesday is high GI white rice, rice cakes, white potatoes.
Thursday is brown rice, sweet potatoes, and puffed corn.

What do you pack or take with you on comp day?
 Everything.
2 or 3 outfits, oil, pump up ropes, I have a kit all made up with tape, needle, thread, pins, etc, all in a bag sits in my spare room and never is unpacked.
Food, water, brandy, some chocolate and honey.

You did two comps - a week a part. What was that like?
A week apart is too close, I only just got over the day of the comp when I had to start to deplete on the Sunday. I  was determined to come in fuller upper body and leaner lower body, which I did, only weighed in .5 kilo lighter the second week but I achieved what I set out to do.

Which part of the comp do you like the best - Do you like the mandatory posing part or the routine (music) part the best?
The trophy presentation.!!
Lol
I love the whole thing, I love the routine because I use to do ballet it is like that.
I hate waiting for the results I am really nervous until they read the results.

Have you ever forgotten your routine whilst on stage?
Oh yes, but I just keep on going, no one out there will know if you are suppose to be doing a chest or tricep pose, so you just keep on going, do something anything and then pick it up.
As long as you look like you are suppose to be doing what you do.
To be honest on a few occasions I have free posed, the only problem with that is my morning show routine was different to the night show. But no one ever notices.

What was it like for you post-comp? How were you feeling? What were some of the first things you did?
Have a shower and get all the muck off me, change into something nice.
Most of the time I then want to sleep I am not one to pig out.
If I go out which I did in Adelaide I had a steak and potatoes and a glass of red.
The same what I had the night before the show.

IFBB All States 10th March

World Police and Fire Games 17th March.

A typical day and/or week in my life right now is:

5am wake up feed Sam the cat. Take L Carnatine. Jumped on scales 60.6 kilos was 65 on Christmas day.

6am walk for up to 60 mins

7.30 meal 1. Today it was eggs, cottage cheese and flax seed oil. And hand fulls of vitamins.

Checked emails, ordered my supplements for the month.

9.30 trained arms today, and abs. (off season don't train abs)

Currently I am training 6 times a week:

Day 1 quads and calves (gotta admit only been training calves this past 12 months)

Day 2 chest, abs,

Day 3 back, abs.

Day 4 hammies and calves

Day 5 shoulders, abs

Day 6 Arms, abs

11am Finished training, meal 2: tuna, broccoli and cauliflower.

Visited my dad as it is his birthday today, had a glass of water with him to celebrate, hehe !

Had to go to the shops on the way home.

1.30 Home, turned on computer and grill on for meal 3:

Chicken and almonds. As you can see this is a protein day, my diet varies daily, tomorrow I get to eat carbs, rice and oats.

Started answering emails.

Received this from my friend in New Zealand Anne.

Also burning a DVD, work on cutting my music and it is now playing whilst I answer these questions.

I have drunk nearly 4 litres of water already today.

Its 3pm, I will have one more meal probably chicken and then go for my hour walk along the soft sand on the beach, then finish with steak and beans.

Oh and another 2 litres of water.

Now I have been delayed as it is now 3.50pm, I have been answering emails.

Tonight I will also do at least one hour of posing practise.

About 9.30pm: crash in bed.

Something I would like to say about bodybuilding that I feel strongly about is…

I have been involved in sport throughout my life; I have been weight training for over 23yrs and competing in Bodybuilding since 1991.

Each year as I get older, I can say that my health and fitness only improves. I find great satisfaction in showing others that this is attainable whatever the age. Bodybuilding has taught me that when one puts ones mind to a task you can achieve the seemingly impossible, that the only thing holding one back is oneself. I have learnt self-control physically and emotionally.

I love the fact I can keep myself looking as good as I can as I get older.

I love this sport it has given me so much and it has introduced me to the most wonderful people all over the world from so many countries.

The thing I hate and really gets to me is people that declare that they are natural and arent! And the shitheads that get up on natural stages and compete, they don’t get tested or they have stopped whatever in time to pass the testing.

Or the people that bag everyone else - she does it this way or he does that blah blah blah. The arm chair critics, what is wrong with them, just do your own thing.

People make choices in life, they choose things for themselves and it’s their choice so let them live with their choice as long as they don't interfere with me or push something onto me I don't want.

Sandy - Heading off for an evening walk on the beach. Looking good !
